DIY: Laundry Room Makeover

Our laundry room makeover was one of the quickest yet influential changes in our home! In our first home we always used the front door to enter the house, however in our current home the garage door sees the majority of the incoming and outgoing traffic. Once I realized how often our guests were going to pass through this space, I knew I needed to give this room a facelift. It was the first impression of our new home to many and the first room we enter daily when we come home. Here is a how it looked when we moved in:
I spent months looking up ideas and trying to find a project that fit in our small (remember I'm on a teacher salary over here) budget! I knew I wanted white cabinets...so that was easy. We used two 30x30x12 Hampton Bay white shaker finished cabinets from Home Depot. Link below:
These in-stock cabinets are available in store at your local Home Depot.
Next, was deciding on a paint color. Brandon constantly gives me trouble for loving my neutrals! He occasionally calls our home the "Beetlejuice" house because so much of it is black, white, or gray. I am getting better at adding in colors here and there! So for our laundry room I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and pick a color! I went with navy (yes this was a big step for me... haha)! Immediately we had an issue and I was reminded why I pick neutral colors!
The color I wanted was a Sherwin Williams color (outter space). My friend had just painted her son's nursery this GORGEOUS navy that pulled a dark gray. I thought that would be a good transition into my main living area. I ordered the paint color I had wanted, went home, and the color I opened looked VERY different from the color I had seen in her pictures. I double checked the name, which was correct, however something was off! I had purchased mine from a big box store and she had gone to the Sherwin Williams store... lesson learned!
This is the color I wanted....
This is the color I brought home...
You can only imagine the panic when I opened and it was VERY blue! Then I thought, maybe it will dry a different color, so I tested a small area. (Left: dry paint/ Right: wet paint)

I ended up actually loving the color when it was dry so we kept it, however it was NOT the color I originally planned! When the paint dried it ended up being a true navy, which I loved.
Next, we hung the cabinets and measured for the two shelves between the cabinets. We used a 2x10 board stained with our favorite stain for our upstairs decor: Varathane (Dark Walnut).
Finally, we installed the industrial style shelf above the washer and dryer. For the shelf we used a 2x6 board cut to length and 1/2 inch black steel pipe that we purchased from Home Depot as well. You can purchase this steel pipe in many different lengths and the fittings that allow for many different styles of shelving. Once the shelf was installed, I had found two glass jars at the dollar store for storage and used a few decorations I had lying around the house or in storage and the room was complete! (Not shown in these pictures is a super cute lined wire basket I use for stray socks! It was completely full....not my proudest mom moment! Haha!)
This project only took us one day to complete and it was very affordable for such a transformation! Altogether this project was right under $350 (minus the washer and dryer).
